Soft silver-grey leaf, the chest tonic of older herbals.
Mullein has been on the herbalist's bench for centuries. The plant grows freely along roadside verges across Victoria and we harvest from a small unimproved paddock we lease. Brew with hot water for eight to ten minutes and strain twice through fine muslin to keep the soft leaf hairs out of the cup. Taken alone or with honey, traditionally for the chest, never as a treatment, always as a tea.
It pairs on the shelf with our peppermint, yarrow for the same quiet evenings. Our note on sweetening a bitter brew covers the why in full.
